Prepared
Remarks of Senator Chuck Grassley
Chairman,
Senate Judiciary Committee
Press
Conference on the steps of the Unites States Supreme Court
Regarding the
nomination of Judge Neil M. Gorsuch
Wednesday,
March 29, 2017
Good
afternoon.
Last
week, the Judiciary Committee saw a brilliant display from Supreme Court
nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch. He showed a command of the law and an independence
from outside influence.
My
Judiciary Committee colleagues and I saw what the Judge’s clerks already know.
The judge has an incredible legal mind and a humility that keeps him grounded.
He’s
easily cleared every hurdle placed in front of him.
It
leaves me stunned that he is facing a filibuster. It’s quite clear that if he
isn’t qualified then nobody is. And, if you’d filibuster this judge, it’s
obvious you’d filibuster anyone. So, the actions by those who want to
filibuster is purely politics.
Because,
if you’re voting on his qualifications. It’s an easy YES.
We’re
joined today by a number of the judge’s clerks. I’ve not seen anything like
what I’ve seen from these people over the last six weeks. They are accomplished
lawyers in their own right. Their fierce loyalty to the judge says a lot about
the type of person we’re going to have on the
Supreme
Court.
They
know him better than most. They know the fair-minded approach he’ll bring to
the court. And, I think they’d agree with one of the judge’s colleagues who
wrote, “I’m not sure we could expect better, or that better presently exists.”
We’re
glad to have so many here today.
