Durbin Discusses Criminal Justice and Public Safety with Illinois Department of Corrections Director Jeffreys

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and lead sponsor of the landmark First Step Act, today met virtually with Rob Jeffreys, Director of the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).  During their meeting, Durbin and Jeffreys discussed the Director’s reform efforts within IDOC, including improvements to programming, reentry services, and incentive-based corrections.  Durbin and Jeffreys also discussed ways in which the federal government can assist IDOC through grants and partnerships.

“Establishing robust programming and incentives for incarcerated individuals—the vast majority of whom will return to their communities—is critical to improving public safety and reducing recidivism, which should be a primary goal of our criminal justice system,” said Durbin.  “I’m glad to work with Director Jeffreys on efforts to improve our justice system.”
