WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today met with Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) Director Steve Dettelbach, to discuss efforts to address the gun violence epidemic and protect public safety. They discussed the need to ensure that the ATF Chicago Field Division is working vigorously to address illicit gun trafficking in the Chicago area, and also discussed the importance of ensuring coordination between different ATF Field Divisions that share jurisdiction over the Quad Cities metropolitan area. Dettelbach is the first Senate-confirmed ATF Director since 2015.
“Gun violence is a public health crisis that must be addressed with an all-hands-on-deck approach,” said Durbin. “After our meeting, I’m confident Director Dettelbach is taking gun crime and illegal gun trafficking seriously. I look forward to continuing to work together to help reduce the unacceptably high levels of gun violence in cities like Chicago, and to ensure our communities are safe.”
