WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, met with Wade Henderson, Interim President and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights; Sherrilyn Ifill, President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.; and Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP. During their call, the group discussed civil and human rights priorities, including criminal justice reform, voting rights, policing reform, immigration, domestic terrorism, and the Equality Act. Durbin expressed his willingness to work alongside these civil rights leaders to enact meaningful reforms that make a difference in the lives of Americans.
“It was great to hear from these distinguished civil rights leaders. They are instrumental in speaking out for those who have faced discrimination, voter suppression, police misconduct, and a multitude of other civil rights issues of our time. We have much work to do on the Judiciary Committee to help end systemic racism and fix a criminal justice system that disproportionately punishes Black and Brown Americans. I will be working alongside the NAACP, LDF, and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights to bring about meaningful change that protects civil rights and voting rights, combats hate crimes and domestic terrorism, and institutes policing reform,” said Durbin.
