WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement after President Biden announced his position on the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, which enshrines gender equality into the Constitution:
“The Equal Rights Amendment is literally a century in the making, and over the years, generations of Americans have done their part to move it forward. They’ve marched on Washington, they’ve met with Congressmen and Senators, and as of 2020, they’ve crossed a crucial threshold—ratification of the ERA in 38 states. That’s the exact number of states needed to certify it as the 28thAmendment to the U.S. Constitution.
“It is past time to explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sex in our Constitution. The President’s announcement sends an important and overdue message to women and girls that they are equal under the law.”
