WASHINGTON –
Today, U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate
Judiciary Committee, released the following statement regarding the announcement
by the Supreme Court that the person(s) responsible for the leaked draft
majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization remains
unknown:
“The leak of the
majority draft opinion in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization
case was an unacceptable breach of the Supreme Court’s confidentiality and
trust. As I said at the time, it’s important that we address serious concerns
about the Court’s lack of transparency and refusal to adopt a binding code of
ethics.
“While it is still
unknown who leaked the draft opinion, we know a few truths: that the Court
struck down a constitutional right in a devastating reversal of a half-century
of precedent, that the American people have overwhelmingly rejected anti-abortion
extremism, and that we must work to restore and codify the right to
reproductive freedom.
“As the Marshal of
the Supreme Court continues her investigation into the leak, it’s important
that we allow her process to continue.”
