Feinstein: Governor Should Veto Alabama Abortion Bill

Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on Alabama’s abortion bill that denies women access to their constitutional rights and threatens physicians with up to 99 years in prison for providing abortion care:

“On the heels of Georgia passing a law effectively eliminating Roe v. Wade, the Alabama legislature last night passed its own cruel and restrictive bill that also seeks to overturn that bedrock Supreme Court decision. The Alabama law would force women to continue their pregnancies even when they are victims of rape and incest. This is abhorrent.

“These laws are nothing more than unconstitutional attacks on women’s rights. The most personal and difficult medical decisions women face should not be determined by politicians substituting their judgment for the advice of doctors. Period.

“I remember what it was like before Roe v. Wade. Women were forced to go to extraordinary measures when their health and lives were put at risk because reproductive health care was not available. We cannot turn back the clock to those dangerous times.

“I encourage Governor Kay Ivey to consider the devastating effects it would have on women’s health and economic freedom and veto this extreme bill.”
