Feinstein: Gun Safety Bills Must Be Top Priority When Congress Returns
Washington—Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on the need for Congress, and especially the Senate, to take up gun safety legislation when it returns to Washington next week:
“Last month, 53 people were killed in the United States in mass shootings. In just the first eight months of 2019 there have been 38 shootings in which three or more people were killed.
“When will enough be enough?
“There are more guns in this country than there are people. And it’s too easy – deadly easy – to get ahold of a military-style assault rifle. With at least 10 million such guns in circulation, it takes only a trip to a gun show or logging onto a website to buy a high-powered firearm without even a simple background check.
“There are bills ready to go that will reduce these deadly shootings. Bills strengthening universal background checks, banning high-capacity magazines, putting in place extreme risk prevention order laws, raising the age to buy assault rifles and prohibiting the manufacture and importation of assault weapons.
“Each of these bills has overwhelming public support. When Congress returns next week, gun safety laws need to be at the top of our priority list. President Trump and Senate Republicans need to stand up to the NRA and say it’s time to take action, it’s time to save lives.”
