Feinstein Statement on DOJ Reversal of LGBT Workplace Protections

Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today issued the following statement opposing the Justice Department’s decision to reverse guidance clarifying that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act prohibits workplace discrimination on the basis of gender identity:

“Yet again, the Justice Department has reversed its position on an important issue of civil rights and fundamental fairness. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act protects all Americans from discrimination in the workplace, including Americans who face discrimination because of their gender identity.

“The department’s latest memo abandons the well-reasoned principles laid out by former Attorney General Eric Holder in his 2014 memo on Title VII’s reach. I urge the department and Attorney General Sessions to reconsider this decision.”
