Feinstein Statement on Handling of Kavanaugh Sexual Battery Allegations

Washington—Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement:

            “The constant drumbeat by Republicans that sexual battery allegations against Brett Kavanaugh were mishandled is clearly an effort to discredit the women who have come forward over the past couple weeks.

            “Dr. Blasey Ford asked that her information be kept confidential, and it was. I only referred her letter to the FBI after it was leaked and reporters were knocking on her door. I don’t know who leaked the information, but it wasn’t my office.

            “My office did assist in her process of obtaining counsel, which was entirely appropriate and was done consistent with protecting her confidentiality.

            “The Anita Hill hearings taught Republicans not to blame the victim, but their new strategy is to blame the messenger.

            “What they should have learned was to fully investigate allegations so that the survivor and accused are treated fairly. They continue to refuse an FBI investigation, which is very unfortunate.”
