Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on the Senate bill to impose unnecessary medical procedure requirements on women and their doctors.
“An anti-choice bill Republicans are pushing today is based on falsehoods and not medical science. Moreover, the procedure it purports to ban is already against the law.
“In reality, this bill is designed to insert the judgment of politicians in the middle of medical decisions between women and their doctors during incredibly painful situations. For example, imagine being pregnant and learning that your baby has a terminal condition. This bill would limit that mother’s decisions and require her doctor to administer unwanted medical care that could prolong her pain and suffering—even putting her health and safety at risk.
“When facing these heart-wrenching and difficult situations, families deserve to have all options available. Politicians should not insert their own ideological judgment into such devastating decisions.
“In addition, this bill criminalizes certain reproductive health care by doctors. The goal of the bill is to instill fear of prosecution so doctors are dissuaded from offering comprehensive reproductive health care services all together.
“This bill is just the latest attack in the decades-long Republican effort to eliminate a woman’s right to control her own body. It’s another example of men making decisions about women’s health care based on a political ideology. It’s long past time that a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions and control her own destiny is respected. We will never stop fighting efforts to erode those rights.”
