Feinstein Statement on School Shooting

Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement after a shooting at Great Mills High School in Lexington Park, Md.: 

            “My thoughts are with the victims, students and families of Great Mills High School. This shooting once again reminds us just how frequent these tragedies occur.

            “Since Sandy Hook, around 250 schools have experienced a shooting. That’s an average of around 50 a year, or one school shooting every week. It’s astonishing that so many schools and so many children have suffered. Active shooter drills shouldn’t be a way of life for our children, but sadly they are.

            “There are steps we can take to reduce shootings that are overwhelmingly supported by the public. We can expand and strengthen the background check system. We can help states in their effort to keep guns from dangerous individuals. We can raise the age to purchase all guns to 21. We can ban dangerous bump stocks that allow semi-automatic guns to fire like machine guns. And we can ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines that belong on the battlefield, not on our streets.

            “Congress must act. It’s long overdue.”
