Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) released the following statement in support of California’s plan to take legal action to block the Trump administration’s new “public charge” rule that would prevent legal immigrants who receive public assistance from receiving a green card:
“The public charge rule turns our back on the immigration story that’s been the fabric of our nation for centuries by denying green cards to immigrants working legally within the law.
“The rule would give immigration officials the ability to punish people who received assistance in the past and broad discretion to deny legal status to someone who may need aid in the future. That’s not who we are as a country.
“California has vowed to fight the public charge rule, a decision I fully support.”
Background
In October, Senator Feinstein led a letter sent by Democratic leaders urging the Trump administration to rescind the proposed public charge rule change. A copy of that letter can be read here.
