Feinstein to Graham: Schedule Vote on Extreme-Risk Protection Order Bill

Washington—Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today called on Chairman Graham to schedule a vote on her bill related to extreme-risk protection laws.

“Given the President’s statement in support for these laws today, I again request that you put the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act on the agenda to be considered as soon as possible,” Senator Feinstein wrote.

Information on Senator Feinstein’s Extreme Risk Protection Order Act is available here. The full letter to Chairman Graham follows:

August 5, 2019
The Honorable Lindsey Graham
United States Senate
Washington, DC
Dear Chairman Graham:

The recent shootings in Gilroy, California; El Paso, Texas; and Dayton, Ohio require the Judiciary Committee to immediately act to stop this plague of gun violence.

Thank you again for holding the hearing on extreme-risk laws in March. Since then, I have asked on more than one occasion that you place the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2019 (S. 506) on the Judiciary Committee’s agenda for a vote.

As you know, this bill creates grants to incentivize states into creating extreme-risk laws. These laws allow family members and law enforcement to ask for court orders to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. Fifteen states and the District of Columbia already have extreme-risk laws on the books. I am glad that we agree that providing incentives to states is the strongest way to enact these measures.

Given the President’s statement in support for these laws today, I again request that you put the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act on the agenda to be considered as soon as possible.

Sincerely yours,

Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator
