Following USA Gymnastics Report, Feinstein Calls for Passage of Bill to Protect Athletes

Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement in reaction to the report released by former U.S. attorney, Deborah Daniels, on the USA Gymnastics sex abuse scandal:

“The report commissioned by USA Gymnastics reveals glaring shortfalls in how the organization has handled allegations of child abuse and confirms that our bill should be passed as soon as possible.

“Our bill requires mandatory reporting of sex-abuse allegations to law enforcement. It reduces the potential for one-on-one interactions between adults and young athletes. It would also ensure that national governing bodies like USA Gymnastics conduct oversight of their members and coaches.

“I urge the Senate to quickly adopt our legislation so that future generations of athletes are better protected from predators.”
