WASHINGTON –
Today, the U.S. Senate confirmed Judge DeAndrea Gist Benjamin to the United
States Circuit Court for the Fourth Circuit. U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick
Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following
statement regarding Judge Benjamin’s confirmation:
“A prominent
jurist, Judge Benjamin brings the whole package: she has deep ties to South
Carolina’s legal community, has presided over at least 300 trials, and has
significant experience litigating in federal court. Her qualifications and
steadfast commitment to justice earned her bipartisan support from her home
state’s delegation, including Senator Graham, Senator Scott, and Representative
Clyburn. Judge Benjamin will be ready to serve the Fourth Circuit with distinction
on day one.
“More broadly,
I’ve emphasized to my Democratic and Republican colleagues: the judicial
nomination and confirmation process relies on Senators working in good faith to
identify and advance highly qualified nominees for the bench. Thanks to these
efforts, we have been able to fill vacancies with a broad and diverse range of
individuals. Judge Benjamin’s confirmation exemplifies that cause – and
reiterates the importance that we continue to work together to ensure the fair
and impartial administration of justice.”
On February 2,
2023, Judge Benjamin
advanced out of the
Judiciary Committee with a bipartisan vote of 12-8.
