Durbin: “This case demonstrates that the Justice Department is not the personal law firm of any President, and I hope this episode impresses that on all public officials.”
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement regarding Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report following his investigation into the reported discovery of classified documents at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C. and the Bidens’ personal residence in Wilmington, Delaware:
“I appreciate the thorough investigation conducted by Special Counsel Hur, a former Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney. This investigation exemplifies President Biden and Attorney General Garland’s commitment to avoiding even the appearance of politicization at the Justice Department.
“All public officials entrusted with our nation’s secrets have a duty to protect them. As detailed in the Special Counsel’s report, there are clearly concerning gaps in the manner in which current and former government officials retain classified materials. In this case, however, President Biden fully cooperated with the investigation, unlike his predecessor. The President’s decision not to obstruct the return of these documents to federal authorities or the Special Counsel’s investigation stands in stark contrast to the conduct of former President Trump, a clear distinction specifically highlighted in the report.
“This case demonstrates that the Justice Department is not the personal law firm of any President, and I hope this episode impresses that on all public officials.”
