Senate Judiciary Committee Votes to Advance Five Judicial Nominees, One Justice Department Nominee

WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee advanced five judicial and one Justice Department nomination to the full Senate, continuing the Committee’s work filling judicial and executive vacancies with highly qualified, diverse candidates who help ensure the fair and impartial administration of the American justice system.

“This morning, we advanced highly qualified nominees to five lifetime judgeships and an executive position at the Justice Department. Today’s votes continue Senate Democrats’ efforts to restore balance to the federal judiciary by advancing nominees who are committed to fair justice for all to the full Senate, and we’re moving ahead with our efforts,” said U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Following today’s meeting and the confirmation of Judge Shanlyn Park to the District of Hawaii, the Senate has confirmed 159 judges to lifetime appointments on the federal bench under Chair Durbin and during the Biden administration. Now, nineteen lifetime judges – including four circuit court nominees and thirteen district court nominees – are eligible for a vote on the Senate floor.

The following nominees advanced by the indicated vote totals:

  • Mustafa Taher Kasubhai, to be United States District Judge for the District of Oregon: 11-0-8
  • Eumi K. Lee, to be United States District Judge for the Northern District of California: 11-10
  • Seth Robert Aframe, to be United States Circuit Judge for the First Circuit: 11-10
  • Edward Sunyol Kiel, to be United States District Judge for the District of New Jersey: 11-10
  • Sarah French Russell, to be United States District Judge for the District of Connecticut: 11-10
  • Christopher Charles Fonzone, to be an Assistant Attorney General, Office of Legal Counsel: 11-10
